Accomplishments
* What are the major goals of the project?
The Louis Stokes STEM Pathways Implementation-Only Alliance: Indiana LSAMP (Indiana LSAMP) is an existing alliance comprised of six institutions including the lead institution, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI, becoming IU Indianapolis in Fall 2024), Indiana University Bloomington, Ball State University, Indiana University Northwest, Indiana University South Bend, and Ivy Tech Community College of Indianapolis (ITCC). Partnership among these six institutions has grown strong since IN LSAMP received its first STEM pathways implementation award (HRD 1618408) in 2016. All six Alliance institutions share a unified commitment to student success and broadening the participation of underrepresented minority (URM) populations in the STEM disciplines. The goal of the Indiana LSAMP in Phase 2 is to significantly increase the quantity and quality of URM students earning STEM baccalaureate degrees. As a baseline, the Alliance institutions will use 2020-2021 data. During that year, Alliance institutions produced 359 URM STEM graduates. By 2028, we plan to increase degree production by 35% to graduate 485 URM STEM graduates. To achieve this goal, the Alliance will employ these objectives:
Improve faculty-mentored undergraduate research engagement, peer tutoring/mentoring assessment, and develop mechanism for streamlining communication between and among faculty, students, and staff.
Graduate well-prepared students in the STEM disciplines who are highly qualified and motivated to pursue graduate education or careers in STEM by strengthening students’ disciplinary competitiveness resulting in fifty percent of funded scholars actively seeking internships, fellowships, or external summer research opportunities and 20% of graduating scholars being accepted into STEM graduate programs.
Leverage and tailor our partnership with ITCC Indianapolis and facilitate seamless transitions into STEM disciplines through programs designed for community college transfers and increase their engagement in faculty mentored research at four-year institutions. In years 1-3, focus on the ITCC Indianapolis/IUPUI transition partnership, integrating the systems to work better for our transfer population. In years 4-5, focus on expanding the transfer partnership between IUSB and the local ITCC campus.
Additionally, this alliance received supplemental funding through the Post-Baccalaureate Research Experiences for LSAMP Students (PRELS). During this reporting period, 3 PRELS Scholars were mentored by faculty members at IUPUI (becoming IU Indianapolis in Fall 2024).
* What was accomplished under these goals and objectives (you must provide information for at least one of the 4 categories below)?
Major Activities:
This project employed several evidence-informed High-Impact Practices (HIPs) to accomplish its goals. These included: (1) Mathematical Placement/Online Review Support (2) Summer Bridge Program; (3) Freshman Learning Communities; (4) Peer Mentoring; (5) Degree Mapping; and (6) Faculty Mentored Research. Each Alliance campus implemented one or more of these HIPs in their context during this reporting period, as described below in the Specific Objectives section. Moreover, each Alliance campus held a range of events to support students and accomplish objectives. In the Supporting Files section below, we provide a document entitled "Alliance-Wide Activities" in which we provide a representative listing of activities at the campus- and alliance-levels. Finally, PRELS Scholars engaged in faculty mentored research with faculty members at IUPUI (becoming IU Indianapolis in Fall 2024).
Specific Objectives:
This section is organized by Alliance campus and includes activities associated with the applicable High-Impact Practices as described above in the Major Activities section. In the Supporting Files section below, we provide a document entitled "Alliance-Wide Activities," in which we provide a representative listing of activities at the campus- and alliance-levels; note: we convened our Governing and Advisory Boards for an annual meeting on Friday, December 8, 2023, via Zoom.
Ball State University
Mathematical Placement and Summer Bridge. IN LSAMP supports first year students in the Summer Bridge Early Start; Power into Math 3-day workshop series worth 1 credit, that helps students fill the gaps in their math skill sets. Students work with a faculty member and using ALEKS can sometime place into a higher math class at the end of the course. INLSAMP supports each student’s cost of attending the program at $460. We supported 4 students in the Summer of 2023.
Faculty Mentored Research. 10 Research Scholars were supported at Ball State. 23 presentations, in either oral or poster form, were accomplished in this reporting period by Scholars from Ball State University. The two primary venues were Ball State Summer Research Celebration (July 2023) and the LSMRCE Conference in Chicago, IL (November 2023).
Strengthening Scholar Competitiveness. The proposed activity was to have 50% of Scholars apply for some type of external experience. In doing so, the Scholars would be guided and supported to leverage their summer research experience to gain additional opportunities. As of the report date, 50% of the BSU Scholars have submitted a qualifying application. We anticipate a higher percentage of participation through the end of the 2023-2024 academic year.
IU Bloomington
Degree Mapping. All IU students have a degree map that includes courses and learning experiences required by each major. Students meet with advisors periodically to monitor progress toward graduation.
Faculty Mentored Research. 14 Research Scholars were supported at this campus in Summer 2023.
IUPUI (becoming IU Indianapolis in Fall 2024)
Peer Mentoring. During the Fall 2023 semester, 8 students were hired as tutors or teaching assistants. All of these students were funded from the administrative account. Teaching assistants (9) typically have about 20-25 students in their sections. Thus, around 200 students were served in this area. In addition, some tutors (5) supported the IUPUI Diversity Enrichment Achievement Program (DEAP), an IUPUI program designed to provide holistic support to students, in their tutoring initiatives on Wednesday nights. These students serviced around 68 students in Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry, Biology, Anatomy, and Physiology.
Degree Mapping. All IU students have a degree map that includes courses and learning experiences required by each major. Students meet with advisors periodically to monitor progress toward graduation.
Faculty Mentored Research. 4 research scholars were funded during Summer 2023. All 4 students participated in the IUPUI Center for Research and Learning Symposium in July of 2023. All 4 scholars also attended and 3 presented at the 2023 LSMRCE conference in Oakbrook, IL in November 2023. Madison Morrison won 3rd place in the poster competition at the event. We plan to support 12-16 students in the upcoming reporting cycle.
IU Northwest
Degree Mapping. All IU students have a degree map that includes courses and learning experiences required by each major. Students meet with advisors periodically to monitor progress toward graduation.
Faculty Mentored Research. Faculty-mentored STEM research is one of the largest strengths of the program at Indiana University Northwest. IUN supported three research scholars in the 2023 academic year, and two of those scholars participated in the LSMRCE Annual Conference at the Louis Stokes Midwest Regional Center of Excellence on November 4, 2023. Additionally, students sharpened their data collection skills, scientific communication, and technical abilities with help from their mentors. Students felt a sense of belonging and faculty members valued the relationships they formed with students and other mentors, gaining insight into their styles of teaching and learning. LSAMP at IUN is in the process of recruiting students for Summer Research 2024.
IU South Bend
Degree Mapping. All IU students have a degree map that includes courses and learning experiences required by each major. Students meet with advisors periodically to monitor progress toward graduation.
Faculty Mentored Research. Five students were engaged in undergraduate research over the summer of 2023.
Ivy Tech
Peer Mentoring. Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters, we have two students were hired as tutors and 1 as learning assistant. Both groups of students are funded from the participant account. Learning assistants typically have about 20-25 students in their sections and are mentored by teaching faculty. They also assist faculty with setting up labs. Students were served in the subjects of biology, chemistry and software development. Tutoring was provided to five students in software development. We are finding it difficult to schedule tutoring sessions, as the students tend use services of tutor.com.
Faculty Mentored Research. We funded 4 research scholars during Summer 2023. All 4 students participated in the IUPUI Center for Research and Learning (CRL) Symposium in July of 2023. All 4 scholars also attended and presented at the 2023 LSMRCE conference in Oakbrook, IL in November 2023. We plan to support 4-5 students in the upcoming reporting cycle.
Inter-Institutional Connection with IUPUI. A jointly-staffed position, supported, in part, by NSF funding, was redesigned to serve Ivy Tech students who participate in mentored research at IUPUI. This role helped to provide a bridge between the two institutions, including harmonizing support services for students.
Significant Results:
A total of 35 LSAMP Scholars were served by the Alliance and its partner campuses during this reporting period, with a breakdown by campus as follows:
Ball State University: 5
IU Bloomington: 14
IUPUI (becoming IU Indianapolis in Fall 2024): 4
IU Northwest: 3
IU South Bend: 5
Ivy Tech: 4
Moreover, given the focus on Faculty Mentored Research, we are pleased that all 35 LSAMP Scholars disseminated their research findings in venues that included both on-campus research symposiums and regional/national conferences. In the Supporting Files section below, we provide a document entitled "LSAMP Research Scholar Presentations," in which we provide a representative listing of presentations given by Scholars during the reporting period.
During this reporting period, 3 PRELS Scholars were mentored by faculty members at IUPUI (becoming IU Indianapolis in Fall 2024). In the Supporting Files section below, we provide a document entitled "PRELS Scholar Reflections," in which we provide scholar-generated and mentor-reviewed reflections.
Finally, in partnership with our external evaluator, Dr. Colleen Manning from Goodman Research Group, Inc., we continue to evaluate the progress, processes, and outcomes of this project and make ongoing improvements, as warranted. In addition to liaising with the PI/Co-PI team, Dr. Manning routinely queries students, faculty, and other stakeholders involved in this project, and she produces periodic reports shared with those working on the project and the project's Governing and Advisory Board members. In the Supporting Files section below, we provide an example of one such report: a document entitled "External Evaluation Report for LSAMP Board Meeting on December 8, 2023," which encapsulates salient evaluation information excerpted from a larger, more comprehensive evaluation report.
Key outcomes or other achievements:
A principal goal of LSAMP is to produce STEM graduates. Across the alliance, 27 students graduated with a STEM degree during this reporting period; here is a breakdown by campus:
Ball State University: 1
IU Bloomington: 13
IUPUI (becoming IU Indianapolis in Fall 2024): 5
IU Northwest: 0
IU South Bend: 4
Ivy Tech: 4
During this reporting period, 4 Scholars who graduated from IU Bloomington have been accepted to graduate school, and one former Scholar received their graduate degree. Finally, feedback from all alliance campuses where there were graduates during this reporting period indicated that several students are employed in positions/organizations that have a direct STEM focus.
* What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?
This section is organized by Alliance campus and includes information about relevant training and professional development taking place during the reporting period:
Ball State University
The program organized events, primarily during the summer research season, to help students develop professionally. The Summer Orientation was held on May 17, 2023, with the Scholars and their mentors. Over the summer, the Scholars attended weekly cohort meetings and an additional weekly meeting of the Chemistry Research Immersive Summer Program where students presented their work in an oral presentation format. On the penultimate day of the Summer Research Program, the Scholars went on a field trip to Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI) in Indianapolis, Indiana where they toured several labs and then participated in a career panel with three IBRI employees. This was the inaugural connection between BSU LSAMP and IBRI and a visit and tour of BSU by IBRI personnel later resulted during the Fall 2023 semester.
IU Bloomington
A series of workshops were provided both during the summer research program and during the academic year. See the document entitled "Alliance-Wide Activities" in the Supporting Files for a listing of these workshops.
IUPUI (becoming IU Indianapolis in Fall 2024)
Professional development at monthly cohort meetings. Topics and descriptions are below:
Graduate school preparation. A presentation was given by graduate students from Assistant Dean for Student Development and Academic Affairs, Tabitha Hardy’s office. The objective was to provide the students with knowledge about graduate school to encourage them to explore and ask questions. To this end, we had two graduate students as guest speakers to discuss graduate programs, the difference between the undergraduate and graduate school, and graduate research.
Internship presentation. The goal of this meeting was to inform the scholars about REUs and ensure that they are taking advantage of the opportunities and internships available to them.
LSMRCE conference presentation. The intended goal was to prepare students for conferences, one of the ways we did this was by having a LSAMP alumni guest speaker who works for LabCorp. We discussed travel arrangements and poster session logistics as well.
IU Northwest
IUN created a LSAMP STEM tutoring center and URM students are provided opportunities wo work as tutors in this center. Tutoring is offered in various 100-level STEM courses. By offering free tutoring to students, it allows them to become familiar with the university and its settings, as well as allowing students to make contacts within the STEM departments. The STEM center has since been expanded at IUN due to HSI funding in 2021, which has enabled more in-depth tutoring services. The STEM Center provides tutoring services from Monday through Thursday in both the fall and spring semesters.
IU South Bend
Summer research scholars were in engaged in orientation at the start of the program. During the program scholars were involved in professional development as well as team building activities. The professional development activities included, preparing a resume, creating CourseNetworking ePortfolio and LinkedIn accounts, poster preparation, professional presentation, and socially networking at professional levels. The Scholars attended weekly cohort meetings geared toward team building.
Ivy Tech
The Eaton Experience Houston was hosted Eaton Corporation and funded by LSMRCE. Students traveled to Houston, TX and participated in an interactive experience at Eaton Corporation, a leader in power management technologies. The trip included a resume workshop, tour of the facility, presentation of available internship/co-op opportunities, and a hands-on activity. Students also had the opportunity to engage with Eaton scientists and employees.
To promote transfer to a four-year institution, prospective and current LSAMP students from Ivy Tech visited Indiana University-Indianapolis. They were given a tour of the campus, had sessions with an admissions counselor, and attended presentations by faculty mentors who host LSAMP summer research in their labs.
To promote the development of soft skills, LSAMP Student Mentors completed trainings in LinkedIn Learning, topics included: Customer Service, Phone, Email, Text, and Communication Etiquette.
* Have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? If so, please provide details.
In addition to convening the Governing and Advisory Boards for an annual meeting on Friday, December 8, 2023, via Zoom, select campuses across the alliance have also disseminated to communities of interest, as noted below:
Ball State University
The Co-Directors have been accepted to present at the “Provost’s Faculty Summit: Minding the Equity Gap.” They will discuss the logic behind the design of the funded activities for students’ retention, persistence in the STEM fields, and graduation. Finally, we will describe outcomes that have been and will be tracked for the funded students. Taken together, we anticipate that some of the lessons learned can be applied across disciplines and Departments within the institution.

* What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?
As an alliance, we will continue to strengthen our efforts to achieve the project's objectives, in consultation with our Governing and Advisory Boards and reliant on evaluation results and campus feedback. Specifically, we will focus on: sustaining, improving, and expanding Faculty Mentored Research and other High Impact Practices; promoting timely persistence to STEM degree completion, along with encouraging students to apply to graduate school; and forging deeper connections between Ivy Tech, our community collage parter, and IUPUI (becoming IU Indianapolis in Fall 2024), and ultimately expanding this partnership to IU South Bend during the latter half of this grant.
Below is information from select campuses concerning some of their forthcoming plans:
Ball State University
During the remainder of the 2023-2024 academic year, we will continue to support students in creating and submitting applications for external opportunities. The recruitment of the Summer 2024 Scholars is in process. We will continue to develop the relationship with IBRI and intend to have another visit in the Summer of 2024. We intend to use this as a model to expand our external partnerships. In the Fall of 2024, the 2024 cohort will present their results from summer research at the alliance-wide conference.
IUPUI (becoming IU Indianapolis in Fall 2024)
We plan on building the bridge between IN LSAMP and the Luddy School of Informatics (the grant specifically requires 50 computer science students) to heavily market the program to students who major in computer science and informatics programs. We also would like to partner with programs such as Life Health Science Internship Program (LHSI), Diversity Scholar Research Program (DSRP), and Diversity Scholar Intensive Research Experience (DRISE) to produce a collaborative effort of assistance, funding, professional development, and opportunity for student participants. There will also be efforts to partner with the University School to assist students who are declaring stem majors after their freshman year.
IU South Bend
The goal is to encourage and support our scholars to present their research findings in conferences. Students will be prepared to present their research during the LSAMP annual conference. We will also encourage former scholars to apply for REU opportunities. Finally, we will support scholars who have graduated and planning to attend graduate school to prepare the application materials.
Ivy Tech
We will continue to build the bridge between IN LSAMP and other like programs to better fund, engage, and support the students all year round. The program may ultimately become a student group as well to help bolster and foster social interaction and outreach to other students. We will also partner with our Math Tutoring Center to continue to expose students to LSAMP opportunities.

Were other collaborators or contacts involved? If so, please provide details.
Across the alliance, each campus reported there are several colleagues from campus-level offices, functions, support units, and academic programs that all collaborate with LSAMP principals in furthering the goals of this project. Examples include leaders (Deans, Deaprtment Chairs, Program Directors, etc.) in STEM-oriented academic programs; academic advisors and leaders of programs providing wrap-around supports for students; colleagues leading programs focused on other High Impact Practices that have a similar objective to LSAMP; and campus functions, such as Institutional Research or the Registrar, which contribute in functionally-appropriate ways to the project.
Impacts
What is the impact on the development of the principal discipline(s) of the project?
Because of the grant, alliance campuses offered increased funded-research opportunities for Research Scholars. Their mentors also received modest support. The research contributed by the LSAMP scholars is contributing to the body of knowledge in each of their respective STEM fields and, increasingly, through inter- and multi-disciplinary collaborations.
What is the impact on other disciplines?
Increasing diversity in the workforce is key to ensure our nation's competitiveness in STEM fields. Faculty Research Mentors and others involved in implementing the LSAMP grant are extending their research into best practices in education and disseminating results through invitations as invited speakers to colleagues on campus and, in previous years, via disciplinary and higher education conferences.
What is the impact on the development of human resources?
Across the alliance, LSAMP Scholars are participating in a variety of activities to foster their personal, academic, and professional growth. These include discussion of finding external opportunities and resources to put together competitive applications; critical evaluation of the research work done by peers; Responsible Conduct of Research training; and resources on finding open job positions and intentionally choosing activities to meet those requirements, including preparing for graduate school; developing and disseminating research findings; and preparing a professional bio.
What was the impact on teaching and educational experiences?
The benefits of being part of an alliance are useful to each campus and its LSAMP collaborators, as promising practices concerning High Impact Practices, including faculty mentored research, are able to be shared across the alliance. These local lessons learned are complemented by drawing on and adapting research finding from the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Discipline-Based Educational Research (DBER).
What is the impact on physical resources that form infrastructure?
Modest funding from the LSAMP grant is making it possible for Faculty Research Mentors at campuses across the alliance to acquire laboratory and related supplies to support not only LSAMP Scholars, but other STEM students.
What is the impact on institutional resources that form infrastructure?
In Phase I of the grant, we saw an increase in the institutionalization of High Impact Practices across all alliance campuses. For Phase II, we are foregrounding faculty mentored research as a key strategy for enhancing LSAMP Scholars' academic and professional development. The goal is to continue institutionalizing such approaches upon conclusion of this project.
What is the impact on information resources that form infrastructure?
Nothing to report.

What is the impact on society beyond science and technology?
At this point, the intentional inclusion of Research Scholars in the STEM community of scholars may have the potential to have the biggest impact on society. This is true not only for the LSAMP Scholars themselves, but also their lab mates and mentoring faculty who often belong to the majority in a Predominantly White Institution. It can help to develop understanding of others of different gender, ethnicity, sexual orientations, international status, etc. Learning how to resolve cultural differences is key to a high functioning society.
What percentage of the award's budget was spent in a foreign country?

Changes/Problems
Changes in approach and reason for change
Recent talent-related changes and forthcoming institutional-related changes have implications for this LSAMP project. We share information here in the spirit of providing context to our work; however, we do not believe these changes will adversely impact our ability in the slightest to accomplish LSAMP's important work.
Recent talent-related changes. As is expected in a multi-year project, there are inevitable separations of talent associated with LSAMP. During the reporting period, we had a change in PI (from Kathy Johnson to James Gladden), a change in the Co-PI/Project Director role (from Kim Nguyen to Stephen Hundley), and a new hire for the LSAMP Project Manager role (Tabitha Campbell). In the fourth quarter of 2023, Jay Gladden, Stephen Hundley, and Tabitha Campbell all assumed their new responsibilities. Fortunately, Stephen Hundley was a Co-PI for Phase 1 of the LSAMP grant. Nevertheless, while all three are enthusiastic and capable contributors to the project, there is a modest learning curve involved.
Forthcoming institutional-related changes. As was made known to NSF during the proposal and award phases of this project, LSAMP’s lead institution—IUPUI—is in the process of becoming IU Indianapolis, effective Fall 2024. This legislatively mandated, governance-supported move will result in Indiana University managing its programs and Purdue University managing its programs through separate institutional structures (essentially reverting back to IUPUI’s pre-1969 structures). A long, stakeholder-inclusive planning and implementation process has unfolded during the past two years, resulting in the necessary foundations to support the transition, along with receiving the necessary approvals from entities such as the Higher Learning Commission (the institutional accreditor). For LSAMP specifically, the realignment has this implication: Science programs will be moving with newly formed IU Indianapolis and Engineering will move to Purdue University Indianapolis. This restructuring will remove a section of engineering majors from our student pool. However, a select few engineering programs will be offered through the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering; thus, we plan to involve those students in LSAMP.
